The Drugs and Poisons section of the Victorian Department of Health is responsible for the administration of approvals for prescribers and dispensers of pharmacotherapy, pharmacotherapy permits and notifications, drug dependence notifications and pharmacotherapy training and accreditation.

The Department of Health does not provide advice on the management of patients. For advice and information on the clinical management of patients with drug or alcohol problems, please call the Drug and Alcohol Clinical Advisory Service on 1800 812 804 or refer to your local services listed on this page.

Drug and Alcohol Clinical Advisory Service (DACAS)

DACAS is a 24 hour, 7 day specialist telephone consultancy service available to all health professionals in Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. The service provides clinical advice to health professionals who have concerns about the management of patients and clients with alcohol and other drug problems.

Initial enquiries to the DACAS service are handled by professional drug and alcohol counsellors. If the enquiry is medical in nature it will be referred to a DACAS Consultant who will be paged to provide a secondary consultation. The DACAS Consultants are experienced Addiction Medicine Specialists.

DACAS consultants aim to respond to the call within one hour, or as soon as possible if the matter is urgent.

DirectLine provides confidential alcohol & drug counselling and referral in Victoria for people of all ages and backgrounds including information and referrals for people in treatment or seeking treatment with opioid replacement therapies.

Pharmacotherapy, Advocacy, Mediation and Support (PAMS) Service.

Run by Harm Reduction Victoria, PAMS provides information or advice to Victorian patients, prescribers or dispensers on ANY issue or concern related to pharmacotherapy.

Odyssey House Circuit Breaker program

The Circuit Breaker program provides a six-week, live-in rehabilitation program in north-east Victoria for people affected by alcohol and other drug addiction, and associated mental health issues. The program accommodates 15 adults and aims to help people end the chaos associated with a substance dependant lifestyle. Patients must self-refer.

Australian Community Support Organisation (ACSO)

​ACSO administers all intake and assessments for mental health and alcohol and other drug services in rural Victoria not including those intake services provided by direct referral to local agencies. Eg: for pharmacotherapy services, a patient may be referred direct to local services if a specialised pharmacotherapy service exists (e.g.: a pharmacotherapy nurse). ​Primary Care Connect is a leading provider of alcohol and other drug services in the Goulburn Valley and Hume regions. Adult pharmacotherapy patients may be referred directly to a Pharmacotherapy Key Worker. Patients under 16 years of age may be referred to an Alcohol and other Drug Youth Worker.

Gateway Health

Gateway Health offer drug withdrawal programs, a needle and syringe program, rural outreach drug diversion and pharmacotherapy services. Referrals for adult patients seeking pharmacotherapies can be made direct to the pharmacotherapy nurse or for patients under 16 years of age, to the Alcohol and Other Drugs youth worker at Gateway Health. Referrals can also be made through other partner agencies.
